I stumbled across this lovely cover while perusing the Indie Next List for March 2013. While design-based illustrated book covers are quite popular at the moment, I love how the cover of A Tale for the Time Being combines photographs and illustrations in colorful horizontal strips. The middle ocean band gives viewers the impression of a Hokusai woodblock print, while the stylized girl in the top band exudes the feeling of a 1920s Shiseido advertisement. Only with careful attention can you discern that the light blue strip and the bottom tree line band are present day photographs. With this cover, the designers artfully captured the juxtaposition of a past life and a modern existence brought together through a diary. I’m looking forward to diving into Ozeki’s latest work!!
